The Robe

In Henry Koster's 1953 epic "The Robe", Richard Burton plays Marcellus Galio, a Roman Tribune who has been given the order to carry out the crucifixion of Jesus. Unaware of his role in this sentence, Marcellus ends up winning the robe Christ wore on the cross in a gambling game, but he suddenly comes down with disturbing visions and let's go of the Robe, which is taken by his slave, Demetrius. The tribune eventually returns to Rome, where he is ordered by Ceasar to return to Judea and find the Robe and destroy it to be free from these nightmares. The film is based on the novel written in 1942 by Loyd C. Douglas. The Robe went on to win an Academy Award for Best Custom Design in a movie in 1954 and later produced a sequel in Demetrius and the Gladiators.
