Forbidden Planet - 1956
Science Fiction films came into their own during the golden era. Films like War of the Worlds, THEM, and The Day the Earth Stood Still proved that film makers could flex their creative muscle to come up with something much more than a Saturday morning special. Creativity is the key word here- CGI, THX, and the man himself, George Lucas were still a few decades away from blessing us with their talents, so movie makers had to really be creative with their special effects and props. In 1956, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer came up with something truly out of this world- "Forbidden Planet", starring Leslie Nielson, Walter Pidgeon, and Anne Francis. The movie was truly a first of its kind of film, displaying a story set somewhere not on Earth, a distant planet called Altair IV. The crew learn of man by the name of Morbius who arrived on the planet 20 years earlier and shares with them the things he has seen and discovered. We are introduced to the one of the first AI characters in film, Robby the Robot, an assistant to the doctor. Forbidden Planet is a revolutionary film in many ways, and it paves the way for more of the same genre. In a way, we don't have Star Wars or Star Trek without this film. It's that important. If you like Sci Fi, give this gem a shot.
