The Hunchback of Notre Dame

"Sanctuary, Sanctuary", the cries of one, Quasimodo who rescues a damsel in distress in Victor Hugo's classic "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". The film adaption was directed by William Dieterle who could not have found better lead roles for his drama. The role of Quasimodo went to Charles Laughton who played many classical roles in his career, portrays the deformed character perfectly. And the role for Esmeralda went to the elegant, Maureen O'Hara, who herself never shied away from vigorous roles. The story is set in 15th century Paris where the Renaissance was starting to sweep Europe and all the while corrupt men in power deemed certain new ideas "evil" to the church. Esmeralda is a gypsy who runs into trouble, but her life is saved by the fearless Quasimodo who is captivated by the young girl. It's a marvelous film and Laughton steals the show as the contorted hero.
