They say, " a son is a son 'til he gets a wife, but a daughter is a daughter all her life." Meet Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy), a successful lawyer, but more than that, a family man who recognizes his daughter Kay (Elizabeth Taylor) has come of age and ready to marry. Vincente Minnelli's "Father of the Bride" is a comedy, but has many moments where the genre turns into a drama, mostly for Father and the Bride. Stanely struggles to sleep during the engagement of his daughter, wondering if his future son-in-law will be able to support Kay-financially, spiritually, relational, all aspects any father would want to know.
But after seeing Kay in her wedding dress, glowing like an Angel, and walking her down the aisle, Stanley comes to realize that all he wants is his daughter to be happy and on her wedding day, that's all that matters. I know most people are familiar with the 1991 remake starring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton, but the original has a certain charm that really captivates the father/daughter relationship. It's a delightful film and I highly recommend it for Dad's who have cold feet.
