"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"- the first line of Charles Dicken's classic," A tale of two cities", paints you a very vague and contrasting scene of what life was like during the late 18th century, specifically during the French revolution. The story focuses on a select few individuals whose lives come together for one single purpose-survival. During this time, there are only two classes of people- the very rich and the very poor, and the poor far out-number the rich. As dark as this story is, there are heroes, and one particular goes by the name of Sydney Carton, played by Ronald Colman. Mr. Carton is a lawyer in London who comes to the aid of Charles Darnay, a french aristocrat, who has been charged with treason against the crown. With his charm and smarts, Mr. Carton helps get Daray acquitted. Later in the story, Paris and all of France cave to the revolution, and if you or anyone in your family were aristocrats, you were executed. Our hero, Mr. Carton learns that his dear friend Mr. Darnay has been charged with not being "a citizen" and sentenced to death, Carton plays a game of chance and places himself in Darnay's place by coming into the bastille and sneaks Darnay out. With the drums beating hard and the cries of the citizens yelling for blood, Carton walks to the guillotine with a fellow prisoner to receive his eternal reward. Charles Dickens A tale of two cities is a story about survival, sacrifice, and hope.
"It's a far, far better thing I do than I've ever done. It's a far, far better place I go to than I've ever known".
